With Chelsea Flower show this week, our thoughts turn to the lavender field. We are very busy preparing the fields for the hectic two week harvest around the end of July.
After a very dry spring, the lavender has loved the recent rain, and then the brilliant sunshine that we have just had has really given the plants a chance to flourish. It really has felt like being in the south of France on the farm this week! It was not just the lavender who benefitted from the recent rain and sunshine – unfortunately this gave the weeds even more encouragement to grow (as if they needed any more!!), therefore we have been busy weeding, keeping them under control!
Charlotte, our wonderful head gardener and Vince her assistant, have treated the plants with liquid seaweed fertiliser and they have really started to look fabulous with lots of new growth, ready to burst into flower in June. We are very excited about the harvest – it is set to be a good one!!!
Now the work does not just happen in the lavender field – we have been very busy too in the polytunnels. Last year’s lavender and rosemary cuttings are ready to be potted up and will in turn create space for this year’s cuttings. It is such a joy to watch what were little cuttings blossom into rather large lavender plants!!
Let the count down to harvest begin!

Sarah has been busy designing two new ranges – the luxurious Royal Blanket to celebrate the 90th birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II , heavier in weight and 100% British. She has used a herringbone pattern incorporating red, white and blue in a limited edition of just 90 blankets – perfect for a very special Christmas gift and a range of dog accessories – dog beds, coats and coming soon a range of pet shampoos and conditioners all made with the same attention to detail that is associated with the Chilcott name.

It has been a very exciting year for Chilcott – a very wet spring was hard for the lavender in the fields which was slow to get going however, our patience was rewarded and despite losing some plants we had a lovely crop. Part of the crop we bunched and dried in our new lavender barn which was great to see in action and the rest of the flower heads we left a little longer for the flowers to open fully and then harvested for steam distillation to extract the oil.
